Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails can occur due to improper nail cutting technique or altered curvature of the nail.

When there is pressure against the skin from the nail, daily steppage leads to a break in the skin, resulting in inflammation in the area and possibly infection. If you have an ingrown toenail, do not cut up into the sides of the nail, always cut the nail straight across. Your chiropodist will give you the ideal shape to prevent future ingrown toenails.

If ingrown toenails occur regardless of treatment, ingrown toenail surgery is recommended. Ingrown toenail surgery (also known as a Partial Nail Avulsion, PNA) prevents the curved in part of the nail from growing back. The end result of a PNA is a narrower nail, which does not grow into the skin on a regular basis.
