Athlete’s Foot - Fungal infections

Athletes foot is a fungal infection of the skin. It is very common among athletes as Athletes tend to be exposed to wet common hard ground, and spend lots of time in moist socks while working out.

Commonly it is seen between the toes or on the bottom of the foot. Skin can be white and cracked in between the toes, or have multiple lesions on the bottom of the foot.

Treatment involves prevention – limiting exposure to areas that are known to have fungi (eg. Pool changerooms, etc) by wearing flip flops and not allowing one’s bare feet to touch any common areas. Flip flops should be worn in the washroom, shower and steam room areas. Once diagnosis is made by the Chiropodist, a prescription cream is recommended for use to clear the fungal infection. As there are several different organisms that can cause a fungal infection, visual inspection by a Chiropodist is recommended to determine appropriate prescription and prevention of spread within family members and friends.
